Anonimo is the Latin derivation from Greek anonimia
meaning ‘without the name’ or ‘nameless’. In other words, this Florentine
watch manufacturer wants to convince customers that buying their products is much more than
a brand name, but about the individual who wears them. "They are a
testimony to and an expression of the wearer's personality," the Florentine
asserts.
Anonimo is the pride and joy of Italian watch making, and represents Italian industry at its finest, so think of it as the Ferrari of watches. I have owned Anonimo before, especially liking the Militare version, so a good one came along I wouldn't want to let it pass and you to miss it either.
The Militare is Anonimo's flagship model. Often seen in magazines, no watch is more dynamic. Only Dino Zei who was one of the designers from the original Panerai company, could come up with a unique and functional locking crown with so much character. The 44mm stainless steel case with destro (left handed) push buttons is also unique.
This limited edition Anonimo Militare Chrono has a pillow-shaped case with finely notched bezel, innovative crown locking device at 6 o’clock, chrono pushers on the left side of the case, and perfectly nested sapphire crystal, featuring a base caliber ETA 2892 movement with Dubois Depraz 2035 chronograph module. It is macho, eye-catching and a cool high-tech look. The sand blasted and brush finished case is well complimented with high gloss chrono pushers cleverly positioned at eight and ten o’clock. Mechanically and aesthetically the case is at least as good as any Panerai. Militare Ref 2007 comes with well balanced black dial. The seconds subdial bears no markings which makes it easily distinguishable form the minute and hour counters. In attempt to remain faithful to the original design of Opera Meccana Militare watch line and the 12-03-06-09 hour format, ninth hour marking has partially disappeared. It is covered by sub sec dial. Water resistance: 12 atm/120 m. Power reserve: 40 hours. Weight: 128 g. The watch is in overall highest near-mint to mint 95%+ condition.
All Anonimo watches are fitted with a patented wax impregnated calf skin strap known as ‘Kodiak.' Apparently this is the only leather strap in the world guaranteed to survive 24-hours submerging in salt water, wow! According to one legend, Kodiak straps are hand made and hand stitched by a 70 year-old craftsman belt maker who is helped by his wife and daughter. Taking into account that total yearly production of all Anonimo watches of only 3,800 pieces I find this myth plausible. Whatever the case is, for the first day or two you might find the Kodiak strap a little unconformable to wear, but as anything made of leather it will soon mold perfectly around your wrist. The strap is unbelievably strong and priced at a replacement RRP of $240. I've included two straps with the watch, both straps slightly used, with the orange one being the original.
This Anonimo Militare Chrono is definitely not your everyday ticker. It is a luxury timepiece designed and built for a true watch lover looking for an unusual and not-yet-popular watch, a collector who migrated from Rolex, first luxury watch experience of great many, to Panerai and is now ready to push the envelope even further. According to the yearly production data, only 3,800 Anonimo watches are made; 2,000 pieces are sold to US dealers and remaining 1,800 pieces are distributed worldwide. Production of Militare Chrono is limited to 300 pieces – to be sold to hardcore watch aficionados. In summary, it is a macho eye-catcher with real potential of becoming a cult. From dealers perspective, the only true obstacle is the high recommended retail price of over $6,400. But now it can be yours for only $2,750 plus $50 shipping/handling/insurance within USA.
