Dear Ed, friendly site! Could you tell me where you're located? I've been
looking for dance lessons here on the east side of KCMO but there don't seem to
be any. I'd be interested in group lessons, if you're still teaching. Bridget sthsunup@aol.com

Hi, Ed, Thank you very much for what I am learning from you. You are a
great dancer and a great teacher. It was my first time to join the ballroom
competition, Heart of America dance sport competition. Because of your
teaching and leading , I got all my eight single dance entries in the first
place. I know you are even better in International style . Now I
am ready to learn international latin dance from you, so far I have only
taken three lessons from you, but I already enjoy it very much.
Your teaching makes the dance easy to learn and shows the beauty
of the dance. Thanks again.

Happy 2008, Selected Dancers!!
Andrew and I hope your New Year
will be everything you want it to be! If you are
made a Resolution to improve your dance skills, we have
a suggestion for you. For the last two months,
several of us have been taking Technique Dance Classes
from Edward and Tina Lam. These classes are not so
much designed to teach steps as they are to teach technique and
style. All of us have taken classes from
various teachers and we are all accomplished dancers.
But, the next step is taking what we are learned and
polishing it so that we look graceful, fluid and are
able to interpret the music through our own personal
style of movements, while keeping with the theme of the
dance. This is what these classes are about. They are
NOT beginner classes nor are they open to the public.
If you have received this email it is because either
Edward and Tina or Andrew and I have seen you dance and
feel that you are an experienced enough dancer to fit
into these semi-private classes.
These classes are taught in Edward
and Tina's home ballroom. Although it is a beautiful
home and ballroom, the space is somewhat limited.
Because of this and because Edward and Tina work with
each dancer individually throughout the class, the class
size is limited. Therefore, only certain dancers have
been invited to attend these classes.
They are teaching 2 parallel
classes, one on Thursday night and one on Friday night.
They go from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. but you need to arrive by
7:00 p.m. in order to get your dance shoes on and get
warmed up for class. Most of us come very casual sweats
or jeans or whatever we wore to work that day. Since
there are two classes, if you have to miss a class due
to some unavoidable issue, you can always come to the
opposite class, as the same skills are taught in both
classes. The classes cost $6 per person and are payable
at the time of the class.
Currently, we are working on Rumba
styling. It does not
matter that you have not been
to the previous Rumba
classes. Edward and Tina teach a
new set of steps each class and only
spend a couple of minutes reviewing previous steps. It
is their philosophy that the class time is for
learning new skills, not for practicing
them. After several weeks of working on one
dance, the dancers in the class vote on which dance we
will work on next and when that will start. After each
class, Edward and Tina put a videotape of what we just
learned on the internet so you can practice at home.
Additionally, if you want to bring a camcorder for your
personal use, that is fine as long as it doesn't
interrupt the class.
Andrew and I had never taken
classes like this before and we had never taken lessons
from Edward either. So, we were a little apprehensive.
But after two months of classes, I can tell you we are
most impressed. Edward is an excellent teacher. He
demonstrates a move and then explains exactly why
he did it the way he did. Then he watches all of us
dance and instead of picking on someone and making them
feel stupid, he once again addresses the entire class
and goes over whatever he has seen that isn't correct and
explains it in another way. He exaggerates his
movements (any of you who know Edward know this!!!) so
that it is EASY for the men to pick up the little
subtleties that most men don't ever notice. Tina is so
fluid and graceful that the women find it easy to
imitate her moves.
So, Andrew and I put our stamp of
approval on their classes. They are challenging, thats
for sure. But they are presented in a comfortable,
casual way yet completely professionally organized and
taught. So, we hope you will come out and try these
classes. I guarantee you will love them and your
dancing will progress by leaps and bounds.
After the Thursday night class,
several of us have started a tradition of going out to
Chapala Mexican Restaurant, not too far from Edward's
house. We have chips and dip and Margaritas or a
late-night supper or just a drink and we laugh at
ourselves, we visit, we talk and we have a blast. Any
of you who attend the Thursday night class are welcome
to join us! After the Friday night class, most of us go
out somewhere to dance socially. (Andrew and I
frequently do BOTH classes because we're SLOW
learners!!!)
So, if you're made a New Year
Resolution to improve your dancing, this is the answer
you've been looking for! Most of us know one another
already, so the social setting is comfortable. And the
teaching is perfect for the intermediate to advanced
dancers.
The 2008 classes start this
Thursday, January 3 and/or Friday, January 4 from 7:15
to 8:15 p.m. (again, arrive in time to be able to
start dancing promptly at 7:15 ).
If you need any further
information, either email (or call) me or email Edward
at
edlam@yahoo.com or give him a call. Otherwise, we
look forward to seeing you Thursday or Friday night.
You do not have to call or RSVP, just show up. Hope to
see you there!

Beginning this Friday, Feb. 1, Edward
and Tina Lam will be teaching beginning dance classes
every Friday night at the Prairie Life Fitness Center
from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and every Monday night from 7:30
to 8:30 p.m. These classes are free to members and only
$7 per person for non-members. Again, these are classes
for beginners, although intermediate dancers should be
able to pick up the all important techniques
for each dance! If you've made a New Year Resolution to
learn to dance or to learn specific dances, this is the
place to come! Several of you have asked where to take
beginning classes in
Johnson County . Well, here you are! Edward and
Tina are excellent teachers and have a way of making
every student feel comfortable with whatever they have
learned.

Happy Chinese New Year to our friends of
Chinese origin! New Year or not, Andrew and I will be
taking semi-private Bolero lessons along with several of
you at Edward and Tina Lam's private ballroom in their
home tonight! We have discovered that our old knees are
not what they once were, but we are giving it the old
college try! These Thursday night classes are for
intermediate levels and address technique more than
steps. Edward is an excellent teacher and identifies
the specifics in each technique that make the step look
smooth and beautiful. We all have a great time and
consummate the evening with a late dinner/snack/drink at
Chapala afterwards! If you are at an intermediate level
and wish to learn styling, technique, proper execution
of steps so that your dancing reaches the next level,
feel free to join us at Edward's house in Olathe any
Thursday night from 7:15 to 8:15. Cost is $6/person per
class. Each class is different; they address a
different technique issue each time, so if you have
missed a class or two, you will not fall behind. After
each class, the step is put on Edward's website so you
can practice at home.

Andrew and I will be taking the
Ballroom Line Dance class at Edward Lam's home ballroom
on Saturday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. This has turned out
to be a diamond hidden in the sand for all of us! Who
would've thought that a bunch of ballroom dancers would
be LINE DANCING for Pete's Sake?!?!?! But, here's what
has happened. So many of us are either single or have a
partner who has an injury or who simply wants to visit
while we want to dance that the Lam Line Dances have
become a way to be able to dance all the songs we want
to!!!
The Cha-Cha line dance is awesome
and a lot of fun and exercise! The Rumba line dance
(which we all TRIED to learn last Saturday) will be
enhanced at this coming Saturday's class. Hopefully, we
can all get our hips to do a Latin Figure 8 instead of
just clumping forward and backwards!!
The class is a lot of fun and it's
even MORE fun to pop up with a bunch of dance friends
and dance it at a ballroom venue. LINE
DANCERS: ATTENTION!!! Remember to keep to one area on
the floor while doing these line dances so that
conventional ballroom dancers can still do their "thing"
on the floor without being run into!!! Our goal is NOT
to "take over" the ballroom venue with line dancing, but
to enhance the fun for EVERYONE who might not otherwise
get to dance all the songs that are played.
The class is $6/person and, once
paid, the student will receive an access code to view
the video of the class online afterwards. Edward Lam's
ballroom is located at 14235 W. 158th Street,
Olathe, Kansas just west of Pflumm and north of
159th Street. These classes are very well
attended so parking is at a premium. Arrive early
enough that you can park down the street or at the pool
parking lot and walk the block to Edward's house.
Additionally, Edward is teaching a
Rumba Technique Seminar at his ballroom from 3:00 to
4:30 p.m. this Saturday. Anyone taking this class is
welcome to stay from 4:30 to 5:00 to practice until the
Line Dance Class starts. NO PARTNER NEEDED FOR EITHER
CLASS!!! If you're having trouble with the Latin hip
movement for the line dance, come early and learn how to
conquer this so your line dance will look like the RUMBA
not the BACK AND FORWARD DANCE. Fee is $8/person for
the Seminar.

Dear Edward,
Thank you for your time yesterday. It was an amazing
lesson. I would
definitely like to schedule some private lessons. What is your schedule
like? I would really like to improve my Latin technique. I like the
way
you break everything down. You are also very patient, which is a
necessity with me! Thank you once again!
